Your AC is acting up. The tech quotes you $1,400 for the repair. The unit is 12 years old. Now what?
This decision burns more Long Island homeowners than any other HVAC choice. Here's the 4-question test we walk our customers through. Answer honestly โ the math usually points you to one answer clearly.
Air conditioners last 12-15 years on Long Island (slightly shorter than national average because of salt air and humidity). The math:
Bonus check: Does it use R-22 refrigerant (older units)? R-22 is phased out and expensive โ about $100/lb when even available. If you have an R-22 leak, replacement is usually cheaper than repair.
Compare the repair cost to the cost of a new system.
Example: $1,400 repair on a 12-year-old unit when a new system installs at $7,000? Repair is 20% โ that's a yes on the repair, even at 12 years old.
Example: $3,500 compressor on a 13-year-old unit when new installs at $7,500? Repair is 47% โ replace.
One major repair is normal. Three in two years is the system telling you it's done.
Track your repairs. We see customers spend $4,000 in patches over 2 years instead of $7,000 on a new system that lasts 15 years and uses 30% less electricity. The math on cumulative repairs always favors replacement at some point.
HVAC efficiency has improved significantly since 2009. Modern systems (SEER 16+) use 30-40% less electricity than systems built in 2003-2010 (SEER 10-13). On Long Island, that's typically:
If your monthly cooling bill jumped this year despite similar weather, the system is degrading. Replacement will usually pay back the difference within 5-7 years.
Beyond money, ask yourself:
Sometimes replacement is the right call even when the math is close โ because you stop worrying about it.
Some HVAC companies are aggressive about pushing replacement because installs are higher commission than repairs. We pay our techs hourly, not on commission, so they don't have that pressure.
If your unit is 9 years old and needs a $400 capacitor, we'll quote the capacitor and tell you "you've got 5 more years out of this thing." If your unit is 14 years old and needs a $3,000 compressor, we'll quote both โ the compressor AND a replacement system โ and let you decide.
